“Hinehuripora” contemporary parawai, contemporary materials jute and cotton. The körero around this piece is to create kakahu in a traditional method that can be worn everyday as you would a jacket or shawl, she is versatile and can be worn this way, over both shoulders or as a maro. The kaupapa starts with the patikitiki papaki rango taniko pattern, an east coast pattern that is based on a traditional fan used to keep flies away from the tupapaku, the taura is threaded through a mawhitiwhiti pattern that resembles ngā whetu down to the black hukahuka, a representation of the passing of generations, the effects of the stars on our birth through te po into te ao, the mawhitiwhiti and taniko repeated at the bottom of her, that the cycle of life and death repeats. A labour of love by our manager here in Tamaki Makaurau.
