Born in Yorkshire, England, and schooled at a Quaker Institution that fostered my interests in art.
I was born in Yorkshire, England, schooled in a Quaker secondary education, attending Falmouth Art School in Cornwall for a Foundation and BA Fine Art Degree course.
In 1979 I decided to emigrate to NZ to work as a graphic artist for a Napier printing company, followed by time spent in CHB doing studio furniture design/manufacture and then settling in EBOP in 1983, becoming a full time artist/sculptor in Ohiwa.
Community service roles have included volunteer firefighter, ambulance driver and then gallery technician at Te Koputu in Whakatane which were fitted alongside creating artwork for galleries and commissions from my home studio/workshop. Work reflects my interest in shared local culture and the natural environment, both sources of inspiration living here, within this beautiful place.
Sculpting is a means of understanding and observing the world and its environs. It is also a way of releasing creativity beyond the self, through disciplined activity and practised labour. There is joy to be found in the use of materials, physical work, observance and visualisation of ideas derived from your surroundings.
It is my focus to find a way of expressing my responses to this land and its people that crosses cultural influences and adds to the sense of belonging for all who live here.
